This presentation will provide an overview of the importance of good quality and quantity sleep for health, and the consequences of sleep disruption by environmental stressors. Important aspects of the bedroom environment relevant for sleep and health, such as noise, light and air quality, will be discussed.

Presenter

Michael Smith is a postdoctoral fellow in the Division of Sleep and Chronobiology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia, USA.  He obtained his BSc and MSc in acoustics from the University of Salford in the United Kingdom, his PhD in medicine from the University of Gothenburg. His research program focuses on the effects of environmental stressors on sleep, and he was recently awarded funding to investigate the metabolic and cognitive consequences of sleep disruption by environmental factors. Michael serves on the executive committee of the International Commission on the Biological Effects of Noise (ICBEN) as chair of Team 5: Effects of noise on sleep, and is a member of the editorial board of the journal Sleep Health.
